Policies
ILLNESS POLICY
Children are often ill. This presents problems to working parents who do not want to be absent from their jobs. However, when your child is sick, please do not bring him/her to the Day care Centre. Please do make other arrangements in advance for the occasions when your child may become ill. If your child becomes ill at our Centre, we will notify you promptly so that arrangements can be made to take him/her home.
As a guideline, your child should be kept at home or removed from the centre if he/she:
- Has a temperature over 38 degrees C
- Is vomiting or has diarrhea
- Feels too unwell to participate in daily activities including outdoor activities
- Has an undiagnosed skin rash
- Has persistent pain
- Has a communicable disease
- Obviously infecdted discharge (thick and coloured)
- Cough, frequent bouts, especially if choking or vomiting
Please note that if your child is suspected to have a communicable disease, the public health nurse will be called and you will be notified. If a communicable disease is confirmed, quarantine regulations set by the Local Board of Health will be observed. These regulations are available at our centre.
MEDICATION POLICY
A “Medical Authorization Form” must be filled out by the parent indicating date, name of child, name of medicine, dosage, and time(s) to be given. An assigned staff member must write down the dosage given, the time given, and sign the Medical Authorization Form when the medication is administered. All medication must be in its original container with the prescription marked indicating date, name of child, prescribing doctor, name of medicine, dosage and time(s) to be given.
Non-prescribed medication can be administered as long as the same “Medical Authorization Form” is filled out completely. Medication given must be in its original container and specify that it is suitable for the age of the child it is being given to. Staff will administer the medication so long as the parent’s request does not exceed the recommended dosage as prescribed on the bottle by either time or amount. Staff have the right to refuse to administer non-prescribed medication.
All medication must be stored in a locked container out of the children’s reach, and refridgerated when necessary.
EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS
Fire drills are held once a month, minimum, to prepare children in the event of fire or for any other emergency evacuation. In the case of an actual fire, the children will be guided to the safety of:
1. (First) McDonald’s Restaurant, Riverbend Square Shopping Centre, Rabbit Hill Road and Terwillegar Drive
2. (Second) Management Office, Riverbend Square Shopping Centre, Tel: 988-9824
The children will remain there until the arrival of their parents who would have been contacted. For evacuation diagram, please see Parents’ Bulletin Board at the centre.
INCIDENT POLICY
In the event of an incident or accident, the Director or the Assistant Director will use their discretion to take any corrective measure deemed necessary for the welfare of the child, i.e., First Aid, notification of parents, etc. An incident report form will be filled out for the parent’s information and signature.
MEDIA POLICY
Please see our boards for an update.
TOYS AND OTHER ITEMS FROM HOME
Our policy is that NO TOYS are to be brought from home unless designated for a show-and-tell toy day (usually Fridays).
DISCIPLINE
We do our best to prevent discipline situations from arising by having qualified staff and child-care professionals. Each child is accepted on an individual basis. We also consider each child’s background and culture, level of development, activity levels, distractibility and sensitivity.
No child is ever labeled, shamed or humiliated. Striking a child for any reason, screaming, yelling, or withholding food as punishment strictly violates our discipline policy. We believe young children learn positive behaviour best through example. We encourage staff to commend children for their positive behaviour.
Age-appropriate limits are set for behaviour, and the children know what is acceptable for them. This is done is a positive way; we focus on the behaviour of the child and not the child’s character. This approach preserves the child’s integrity and offers positive guidance for learning. Cue and verbal explanations decrease children’s anxiety and helps them to anticipate or prepare for change. Feelings of the children are recognized and understood when limits are set. Simple reminders to children also help in discipline.
For more information on this topic, please see the Parent Handbook.
